Recycled Glass tiles – why are they so expensive?

I have been researching recycled Glass Tiles (in particular mosaics) on line and am wondering why they can cost as much as £70 per m2 including 15% VAT, when the raw product is recycled glass. I assume the glass is bought by the tile manufacturer from recycling plants at tuppence a tonne but even with the added manufacturing costs and other mark ups, they ought to be loads cheaper than ceramic or porcelain. Shouldn’t they?

Making things from glass is expensive whether it is recycled or made from the raw materials.
It is simply a very energy intensive process, requiring enormous amounts of heat and water.

Producing ceramic and porcelain products doesn’t require anything like the amount of heat and water.
